Cold Cloning / Licensing Question

We have 3 projects in mind.

  1. Use one PE 2950 for a virtual server farm (5 virtual servers total)

  2. Use one PE 2950 for virtual web farm (3+ virtual servers)

  3. Use one PE 2950 to clone one physical server

We've purchased 3 Enterprise licenses for VI3. We were going to hot clone on project #3 using the free VMware Converter Starter which does not require a license. We now want to cold clone on porject #3. Will we need an additional license to cold clone?

When you purchase VI3 Enterprise you automatically get VMWare Converter Enterprise licenses, plus if you use Converter Starter you can't clone directly into an ESX server, you have to dump to disk then copy to an ESX server and manually register etc etc.

What do you mean in #3? If you are using a dedicated "P2V Helper" type server for VMWare Converter, it doesn't have to be physical let alone licensed for ESX. My P2V Helper is a VM. Once the converter is installed on the source, the source machine does all of the work, the P2V Helper machine does nothing but monitor the progress.
