Client load on ESX server recamendations in ESX 3.5

If I have a Server that is a standalone ESX server with 4 CPU single core no hyperthreading and 16gb of ram, and just figure unlimited SAN space, how would I know the capacity of that server for ESX to house a number of VM clients? I have been doing KB searches and can not seem to find it.

Really depends on the load of the VMs - but VMware recommends 4-8 VMs per core - so for your example just looking at CPU you can 16-32 VMs assuming there is sufficient memory once again which is going to depend on vm workload -

That all depends on how you deploy your VM's. 1vCPU and 1GB of RAM per VM, you shouldn't have any problems getting say 8:1. Also, unlimited SAN space as far as the LUNs presented to ESX, can only be 2TB

but again you could get more, you could get less. Just keep an eye on your resources.

With kind of CPU do you have?

Very old CPU has usually poor performance (and very small cache).

In this cases you could be very limited on the number of the total number of vCPU (for performance issue, not for technology issue).
