Hello All,
Just wondering if you have ESX without vmotion but have HA what is the best way to migrate the VM back over to the oringal host in a cluster when HA moves a VM due to a host failure.
I know you can Export the VM over to the other host when it comes back up and you can add it to inventory if it is a hardware failure and the orginal host won't come back up anytime soon. What is the best way of doing this? is there a console command maybe to make HA push a VM over to the other host or is export still the best way?
Welcome to the forums - with out vmotion there is no way to do it with out down time - the easiest way is to power down the vm - unregister it form the host it is on - use the datastore browser on the second host andreadd it to that host and power up the vm - you should be able to do this in less than 5 minutes -

Hello,
Thanks for the information, Downtime isn't a concern as we have a downtime window when this could be done. So the unregister and re-inventory the VM is the best way?
Is the Export option ever a good idea? or is that just for cold migrating across clusters?
if you have shared storage, the remove from inventory, add to inventory option will work great if you don't have vMotion. Otherwise you can use VMware Converter and do a V2V.
Export/import is agood idea you do not shared storage
