Best approach for a Windows WebFarm

Hello all

I am going to implement a webfarm on our vmware infrastructure

This will be app'x 50 nearly identical windows machines (2008 32bit)

We are on ESX 3.5 and 4 (mid move)

What clever vmware tricks (I am thinking, consolidated disks etc) could I use in this scenario?

Would vmware VDI be suitable, or is that notapt for nearly identical servers?

Any pointers would be appreciated

Cheers

Al

Hello Alnapp,

I am not sure what you mean by "consolidated disks".

Also, VMware View (VDI) is for desktop workloads, not server workloads.

VMware advanced memory features like Transparent Page Sharing will automatically be used with the 50 nearly identical windows machines on their respective host servers. So you could probably get some decent memory oversubscription on your hosts without sacrificing much performance. You'll have to test that.

Thanks for the info hstagner

I thought that was the case with VDI, but wanted confirmation.

I take your point aboutmemory consolidationetc and am already doing that, but is there any disk resource consolidation that could be done (shared OSdisks, etc.)?
