I'm looking for a virtual SAN solution that will allow me to use VMware features such VMotion, HA, DRS using the local storage on multiple hosts. I have started looking into Left Hand Network's (now HP) Virtual SAN Appliance but was wondering if anyone out there had experience with that product or could recommend other solutions. Thanks - Doug
how about DataCore?

Jose
Sorry I don't have experience with Left hand networks. I could suggest looking into IBM System Storage hardware for a virtual san environment.
There are a variety of options available to you. What exactly are you looking to accomplish on this project?

Steven

Hello,
Options available:
These install within VMs and mirror LUNs between hosts
Xtravirt XVS (limited to 1 LUN and 2 Hosts)
HP Lefthand Networks VSA (no limits)
NFS or iSCSI server can also be used.
For demos I use OpenFiler w/iSCSI within VM workstation which also hosts 2 ESX hosts.
So there are many 'software' options available to you.

The big question, is are you looking for free, cheap, or for more?
Openfiler or FreeNAS are two decent freeies. I've used both of these.
Starwind and Datacore have software based solutions.... I own the Starwind product, and it works well.
There's also the Lefthand products...
And then there are quite a few hardware based products.
It really depends on your price range...

With "Virtual SAN Appliance " you won't get really good performance. Last time I heard a lot about Datacore - San melody or San symphony - these seems to be quite respectable - Lefthand seems to go down after Hp takeover, IMHO.
it's free uptil 2TB and supported afaik.
