Advantage of windows 2008 using in a vm

The windows 2008 os will have the following advantage from

virtualisation side:

1.) One kernel for uni and multi processor systems.

So we only have to build one image .

2.) Change from a installed uni or multi os vice versa without having to

change the hal like windows 2003,

3.) Automatic defragmentation

Which other adavantage will be there?

Automatic defragmentation may also be a disadvantage:

If you work with snapshots, bigger snapshot files will result and therefore your esx server will be slower.

smaller c partition (core partion 2 GB)

So if the requirements are 2 Gb and double this to 4 Gb

and have today 10 Gb only for system data and system programs , we can save 50% .

A likely disadvantage will be whatever licencing model M$ comes up with to stop us running it in any other virtualisation software but theirs! Smiley Happy

2008 auto-aligns so no more need for diskpar/diskpart commands when used with a SAN/VMware...

LDM does shrink disks, but that still doesnt allow you to shrink the VMDK does it? If you shrink it will just leave you with unallocated disk. Let me know if I'm missing something. Thanks

Maybe if its an RDM?

New technologies will facilitate this I think Smiley Happy

Doesn't Windows 2003 automatically adjust the HAL from uni to multi when it senses more processors? I know 2000 you had to change it manually.

IMHO it is still too early to know how many of MS new technologies will actually make it to the release product.

WinFS anyone? Smiley Happy

True, but ive seen HP are plugging the new LDM as a extended feature in there new EVA range so the insider track must show that they are putting heavy development into the product.

Personally im not convinced yet myself....Microsoft HV Virtualisation anyone? Smiley Happy
