win 8 and 2012 64bits guest os'es cannot be installed

hi folks,

I am struggling with the issue for quite a while now

I was able to install windows 8 32 bits on my AMD Opteron 8220 SE machine

but once try to install other versions such as Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 2012 R2 (64bits) the systems get installed and after reboot a message appears saying:

An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I think it is the CPU fault as it is quite ancient but I wanted to verify that with you... cuz according to AMD it supports 64-bits virtualization

What do you think ??

Thanks,

Download Securable https://www.grc.com/securable.htm

And run it on your system. It will tell you if AMD-V is supported and enabled.

If its not, please go into your BIOS and enable it.

thanks for the quick reply Abhilashhb

I should have said that earlier... unfortunately, the machine is a server and cannot be restarted as other HA vms are running on it.

any chance that I could check if AMD-V is enabled from the OS level ?

Thanks,

Totally my mistake. I did not see that you have posted the question in ESXi forum. Apologies.

You can use the below KB Article and determine if AMD-V is supported/enabled

VMware KB: Determining if Intel Virtualization Technology or AMD Virtualization is enabled in the BI...

cool no worries

appreciate your prompt replies

so I run the commands
# esxcfg-info|grep "HV Support"

and the output was 1 which means that 1 - VT/AMD-V indicates that VT or AMD-V might be available but it is not supported for this hardware.

should I arrange a reboot and make sure that hardware virtualization is on ? or if it is not supported it means that wont be able to run 64-bits guest operating systems ??

Thanks,

64-bit VMs are supported on this CPU with binary translation, as is the case for all but the very earliest AMD64 CPUs.

Upgrade your VM to virtual hardware version 9 or greater.  Use the web client and navigate to the processor settings screen. Check the box next to  "Expose hardware-assisted virtualization to the guest operating system."
