where does the COS-VM boot from ?

I was trying to start the COS-VM in Workstation or ESXi - boot it did not boot.

Then I used a LiveCD to inspect the vmdk and found that no boot-files are inside the vmdk - nor is any of the partition s set to active.

So how does the COS-VM boots up ?

Full ESX create a /boot partition as a Linux style with kernel and initrd files.

Grub is installed in the MBR for the disk.

The COS disk is a vmdk located in a VMFS partition on the same disk, under a folder name esxconsole-ESX_UUID.

The name of this file is esxconsole.vmdk (with the relative -flat file) and it contains the /, the /var/log and other custom partitions.

How the kernel can take a vmdk and use as a root file system is not clear (for me), maybe a modified loop filesystem is used.

For ESXi is quite different, cause a vfat partition is used for ESXi files.

For your problem try to use ESXi installed on a small disk, then add later the VMFS disk.

Be sure that the "system" disk is bootable.

Hi Andre - no problem exists other than my curiousity Smiley Wink

I am wondering about the same thing
