vsphere 4.1 licensing

We have some vSphere 4 licenses but our support/maintenance contract is now expired. Im not very familiar with vmware licensing and have not been able to find out so far if vSphere 4.1 is covered by our current licenses or if we would need an active contract in order to get a new license for it?

You do not need to purchase new vSphere license to get 4.1 but you do need active support subscription, so time to renew your support contract.
