vmware migration

Hi,

I have a quick vmware migration question.

We are putting in a new dell poweredge r420 server at a client site. It is
replacing a dell poweredge r310 which is running vmware 4.0. It is managed
by vmware vcenter server at head office.

If I make the new r420 managed by vcenter as well, and do a host to host
migration, will it try to pull the VMs through the link back to head office
and then back down to the new server? With the VMs being around 200GB I
don't want to pull that through as the link as its' only adsl speed.

Thanks,

Daniel.

Welcome to the VMware Communities forums.  The hosts will communicate directly with each other to migrate the VM.  You'll just want to ensure that both hosts can ping each other by the IP or hostname by which they are registered with in vCenter.

thanks Dave.

also, am i right in assuming that with head office running vmware vcenter server 4.0

it wouldn't be able to manage an esxi 5.0 or 5.1 host ? ie the new server would have to run esx 4.x or I would have to upgrade vmware vcenter server to version 5. which would require a 64 bit windows server.

regards,

Daniel.

That's right - you'll need vcenter 5.x to manage ESXi 5.x.
