Making the ESX to ESXi switch and I am looking for a vmkping alternative in say... powershell?
I'm aware of the option to turn on "unsupported mode" in ESXi but I'm trying to avoid doing anything unsupported.
With ESXi 4.1 "Tech Support Mode" can officially be configured (activated/deactivated even with timout settings) from either the DCUI or the vSpere Client GUI.
see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1017910 for details.

There might be something in the API to expose this functionality but I haven't seen anything specific. The DCUI does a ping test but I don't know if it uses ping or if the functionality is built into it.
Enabling remote tech support would be fine in this case. You can start / stop remote TSM with PowerCLI.
Also keep an eye on esxcli. The network namespace was added with the release of 4.1 but currently it only supports netstat / arp functionality.
