vm machine as a fileserver - performance

Hello,

I have HP DL380 G8 with vmware ESXI + essential kit.

HW is 8x 15k SAS hdd and 128gb ram. I'm using raid 6 array. Size of data is 1TB.

I'm trying to create vm machine as a fileserver. My idea is to have all the data on array (hypervisor + vm machine).

Is it a good solution for fileserver performance? Is it better to have all the data (vm machine) on NAS, Fibre Chanel or iscsi?

What is your experience? What would you recommend?

If you will use this internal disks exclusively for the File Server, you will get a good performance. When thinking about a lot of machines, having iSCSI or even FC will be a better choice. Your disks are fast, and all will depend on your local SAS controller.

I'm agreed with Marcelo but if you can use FC, use RDM for your virtual machine and assign your LUNs directly to the VM.

RDM has few limitation and you can use Microsoft Clustering by using RDM.
