vm disappears after upgrade 5.1 to 5.5

I had a VM that was working fine for months. I upgraded from 5.1 to 5.5 U2 and a VM "lost" it's hard drives -- none show up in the settings for the VM and most importantly, no VMDK files are "seen" if I browse to add one to the VM.  The vmdk is there in the datastore but when I attempt to add the drive it will not show up as a drive\file I can add.

The attached screen shot shows what I mean better than any words. The dialog box is empty but there are legitimate vmdk files in that folder in the store. So why can't I attach them to a VM?

Thoughts anyone?

Hello ,

If you see the VM's folders you can open the folder, Right-click on the .vmx file and select Add to inventory. that will get your VM back in the inventory.

You should not use Datastorebrowser when you troubleshoot problems  - use WinSCP instead.
Please post a screenshot of the directory
