virtual hardware upgrade is grayed out, now what?

I recently upgraded to ESXi5, the VCenter upgrade went fine and I am now moving vm's to the new cluster. All vm's hardware upgrades went well expect for the VCenter vm. The hardware upgrade for the VCenter server is not an option when I have the vm powered down. Has anyone seen this before and is there a powershell command that will allow me to upgrade the virtual hardware to version 8?

Just to confirm, you have the vi client connected directly to the host that runs your vcenter vm ?

Does the vCenter Server VM contain any special virtual hardware or settings? Please post (attach) the VM's configuration (.vmx) file to your next post to see whether this is related to the VM's configuration.
