vSphere, vCenter and vRangerPro3

Am new to this company. We have several vSphere4 hosts,vCenter and using vRangerPro3 to perform VM virtual state backups. We also have a host site that is not permanent. We are developing a DR plan and our desire is to manually build 2 vSphere hosts, restore to one of the hosts our vRangerpro3 VM and then recover the VMs using vRanger. Now, here's the question> In production we use vCenter but since we want to make the DR process as simple as possible, we do not want to use vCenter. Can we do this without vCenter and use the VIC to access the host then launch the vRanger VM to perform the VM recoveries?

Also, I'd like to do a small test of this procedure by using an ESX4i host, create a vRanger VM and then perform a backup to the vRanger drives and then restore from the drive OR do it by backing up a VM to the DataStore on the ESX4i host (has 1 TB drive..but, obviously the COS is located here , too) and then restore from the Datastore. Can either work?
