vSphere essentials (esxi 5.0) problem with hardware memory alert

Hi,

I have recently installed vSphere essentials (esxi 5.0) in one of the companies I look after. The server is a DL380G7 with 48GB Ram, two processors and 8 SAS drives in raid 10. Server bios is on latest revision. RAM is HP branded.

In the hardware status tab in vsphere client, there is always one alert present - System Board 8 Memory: Uncorrectable ECC - Assert. Screengrab of the error attached:

I have checked the server memory staus LEDs and they are all fine. iLO and IML logs show no errors and the server seems to be operating fine.

I have tried to reset the sensors using the link in the hardware status tab page but the error persists.

Im at a loss as to what to do here. I cant really phone in a warranty claim with HP as there is no indication of a fault on the server and no particular stick of ram is identified.

I have googled the error message pretty extensively and have found a few threads which have similar issues but no resolution.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice on what could be causing this and what I can do to remove the error?

Thanks,

Keith

Just to be sure run MemTest+ on your system.

And/or install HP Insight to have more information about this error

Hi Andre,

I have already installed HP Insight Manager on our network and it is reporting the server as healthy, no issues.

Running memtest isnt really possible at the moment due to the server being in production and hosting vms used 24/7. I may be able to schedule this but to be honest, if HP diags are reporting everything as fine, I would be reluctant to.

Hi,

i am not sure if this will help you but I know that there is a cim provider update available for the g7. Maybe that wil fix it.

You could download that package at hp website and upload it to vum to provide a host upgrade.

Also check that you are using the later BIOS version

Hi,

The bios version is P67 2011.05.05 which seems to be the latest version. Ive downloaded the HP remote system management tools for vmware and will give those a whirl to see if they report anything.

Hi, the problem seemed to disappear when I installed the various host updates using vcenter update.

Sorry I cant be more specific! Try running vcenter update and see what happens.
