vSphere enterpriseplus and lapsed SnS

I was asked today what the downsides would be if we let our SnS expire and not renew it for the foreseeable future.

Without current Software and Support contract can we still recieve maintenance updates(i.e. vSphere 4 update 2)?

Can support be purchased on a per incident basis for the EnterprisePlus licenses?

So far we have been fortunate to not have to utilize their support services. We have been able to answer all of our questions from the support forums.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this topic would be appreciated.

I think this is probably a call to VMware licensing for a definitive answer.

My expectation is you can still download patches and updates

You can purchase per incident support.

You will NOT receive major updates (esx 5,etc) without S&S

You can renew S&S even after its expired. (really just purchasing it again). May cost more then renewing all the time
