vSphere - copy from USB external hard drive to local datastore

Hi everybody,

Yesterday I created this post: http://communities.vmware.com/message/2135813
With your help we managed to find, that the only way to install ESXi from ISO image on external USB hard drive is to attach it to the machine close to it and run the installation from there, cannot be done directly.

Today, we need your help with the next step, as it seems.

We have a physical Dell R620 machine with VMware ESXi 5.0 U1 installed. We have an external hard drive with the ISO installation images of OS, backup software and some more.

The question is - how to copy the data from USB external drive directly attached to the ESXi Host to the local Datastore on the Host.

Yes, we know we can do it the way that we connect it to the machine on the same location and copy it to the datastore from there. But we would like to do it directly. And we did not fine the way by ourselves, nor using Uncle Google yet.

Bad searching ability, or, again, not possible?

Thank you for your help!

The short way to do that is to use the Datastorebrowser or WinSCP

ESXi itself can only only read Fat16 from external drives - so what looks like the short way is the long way 😉
