vSphere client remote connection fails

Hi people,

I hope someone can help me with this.

I've setup an Esxi 4 host with a vm client OS SBS2008.

Everything is working fine except when I try connecting from home I get the following error :

The server could not interpret the communication from the client. Fault 404.

I configured the router to map ports 443, 902 and 903 to the internal IP of the host (192.168.0.2).

When I open a VPN connection first and then connect with the vSphere client everything is working like it should.

The router is a Linksys WRT54GL-EU.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Brgds,

Luc

Hi Luc,

Can you give a bit more information on your networking setup please? Is the ESXi host at work? Is it behind a firewall? What does the IP / DNS infrastructure look like?

The Linksys router's firewall is active yes.

The Esxi is at a client's place.

Router IP : 192.168.0.1

Esxi host IP : 192.168.0.2

SBS IP : 192.168.0.3

DNS is handled by the SBS2008 with forwarders to the ISP DNS servers.

Everything is working fine just except the passing through the router from a remote site.

Thanks Luc, got it.

Do you get errors connecting to the host via https in a browser as well as through the vSphere client?

I've seen a similar error across a cisco router when the MTU size was set to a weird value.

Can you post the vSphere client logs? Also, can you connect via IP rather than FQDN?

Dan,

Thanks for your help.

I tried connecting via https in IE and I get following result :

Server

Error403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.

You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.

Thats a bit odd - has it even prompted you for credentials at this point? Do you get to see the http 'Welcome' page? Depending on which browser you are using it may be trying to connect using your cached credentials?

Also - the vSphere client logs are quite useful...

No prompt, it gives immediately that message.

No cached data, it's the first time I connect via https from this pc.

I'm guessing it has something todo with the router or the remote workplace of the SBS2008.

I just tried it through the vpn with the internal IP and I immediately get the welcome page. After that I did it again but with the external IP and again I get access denied.
