vSphere Web Client is so bad that my experience managing and supporting VMware has turn to....

Purpose of this post is simple and obvious...  bring back development to thick client.  THANKS!

adamjg, dont forget to update your client as well.

I dont think you need to upgrade your vcenter or hosts to update 2.

I just updated my client to update 2 and I am able to edit the version 10 VMs.  I have vCenter and hosts on update 1 right now.

Can anyone else confirm?

That's correct, you just need to update your Client and can keep vCenter or ESXi hosts on U1 or U0 for now:

http://www.v-front.de/2014/09/vmware-releases-vsphere-55-update-2.html

It seems the restrictions for editing are purely for newer virtual hardware features such as adding a virtual SATA/AHCI controller that was introduced with v10.

Yes,, just upgrade C# client to 55 U2. In my environment I have just upgraded C# client and I am able to edit the VM with Hw version 10.

Refer: Great News for VMware users: vSphere 5.5 U2 C# client can edit VMs with Virtual HW Version 10 | vThi...

When I edit a VM at HW version 10 with the C# client is still states that there are certain things that still need to be edited with the web client. Does anyone know exactly what items that you still need to use the web client to edit?

Below documentation explains everything :

vSphere 5.5 Documentation Center

Some examples as follows:

1. With 55U2 C# client, you can edit features up to HW version 8. (Refer above document for what hardware features are offered by version 8.) Now anything supported with version 9 & 10, you will have to edit that through web client or vSphere APIs( PowerCLIs).

Ex.

1.SATA controllers, vPMC support, Nested HV support all these features are not supported on HW version 8. These features should be edited from web client.

2. Maximum number of logical processors : 32 on HW 8 but 64 on HW 10. Hence if you want to increase logical processors beyond 32, you will have to use web client.

Please compare above document for version 8, 9, 10.

Yep this was it. As someone else said, the only thing you have to upgrade is the client itself and not the hosts or vCenter.

If this were Microsoft there would have been no choice but to use the web client starting with vsphere 5.1. At least it appears that VMware is being flexible by extending support for the C# client. I'm surprised no one mentioned what MS did with Exchange. Also good luck installing exchange 2010 EMC on windows 8. Things could be a lot worse but it sounds like VMware is at least trying to make this right.

I'm using IE11 on a machine with 24GB RAM. If this is "good", I'd have to see bad.

I suspect that your vCenter server isn't sized propperly.  Make sure that the Java heaps are set properly, especially if you've upgraded to 5.5U2.

Funnily enough, I suspect VMware intransigence is directly because of Microsoft.

Like it or not, Microsoft are a competitor in the hypervisor market, so having a requirement on your competitors products (Windows for the c# client, like the vCenter used to rely on Windows/SQL) is not great.

So despite the fact that we (practically) all have access to a Windows machine to run the admin console, VMware need to do what they can to stop encouraging people to give money to their competitors. We users have to grin and bear it. Most companies would adopt a similar approach I suspect.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that feels this way. The sad part is that even during my VCP5.5 class we used the thick client because the web client kept crashing and wasn't working properly. Not to mention requiring the web client to do some things but still requiring the thick client to use Update Manager. Just stupid.

After reading most of the post here I agree with bringing back the original Client, it was WAY easier to navigate and use. Also on the positive side it worked.

One thing I am having trouble understanding is at what point in this thread was anyone trying to make the Web Client better????

Check out the vCSA it works great w c# client.  Takes huge burden of SQL install w windows and can be redeployed extremely fast. It's finicky during initializayion though make sure it's cinnevres to Internet before running config wiZard.

I have also wondered how VMware says it is listening to its customers and making the web client better.  If they were listening to their customers there would not be a web client.  I guess they can't admit that they were ignoring their customers and are now being forced to at least try to act like they are listening.

That's exactly what I was thinking.  I guess the academic pedigree folks up top won't realize this until revenue dives.

Arrogance is a form of ignorance.

Sadly, the web client has effected my job satisfaction.  I was once nothing but an MCSE, and grew to hate the hours and hours of late night windows support recovering windows into the early morning hours, waiting too long for reboots etc etc...

my first vmware implementation was in 2004, and from there I made it my career focus and never looked back, almost doubling my income in a few short years, with great joy in managing a new and exciting technology that made things easier and more efficient.

IN one swoop  of the web client vmware  management has robbed me of this, and many others.  They don't understand the magnitude this horrible piece of sh...t is having on the 'hands on' aspect of managing the technology.  It is atrocious and outright insulting.

VMware - you can no longer claim your product introduces efficiency in the form of op ex.  take down and or edit every web page and marketing publication that states your product makes thing easier and more efficient, it is simply no longer the case.  You have sabotaged yourself and are sabotaging the future of your growth Through poor decision making and arrogance.

the entire IT world is laughing at you right now while you arrogantly sit back and dilute yourselves with thoughts of LEADING the world into a new era.  Smart people aren't lead with arrogance and poor decision making, and especially not by the release of poorly design product.   You are stumbling big time, the writing is on the wall.

Fix the fiasco, the for good of all.

If the vSphere web client is the future of VMware, then I can't see myself having a future with VMware. This is a horrible step backwards. Awful. I've been using VMware for 5 years now and I recently moved our systems from 5.1 to 5.5 only to find out that "new features are only available in the web client". Why? The Windows client was perfect. Yes a cross platform client would be nice, but not like this. I'd rather run it on a Windows VM. Most admins are used to doing that anyway because many business tools only run on Windows.

Hello!

But IS VMware listening?

This thread is... what.. 6 years old?

Is such a big company not able to fix that is 6 years?! This makes one wunder if one has based its company on the right platform? :'(

Tick toc, tick toc... VMware!

Best regards,

It's not six years old, the thread was created in April 2014, so at most 6months old. To turn around such a big company as VMware will take more than six months, so don't expect any wonders any time soon..

They were wise enough get rid of the vRAM tax that everyone hated. Hopefully they will listen to the community (AKA customers) and do the right thing.

The important thing is to continue to be vocal, which is why I decided to pile on this thread.
