I'm getting the following error when I run the Host Update Utility
ERROR: Not enough space on the boot partition
The boot partition does not have enough space to store initrd.img.
Expected free space (MB): 50, found: 44
What can I free up to get to the amount required?
Send the output of this command:
df -h
And the version of the ESX 3.x

Can you give more information about the device ESX is installed on (usb or SAN or local drive? ) Are you upgrading an ESX or ESXi host? What ESX version are you upgrading from and to? How is it partitioned? Is /boot a separate partition would freeing up space in root level help?
There are a number of caveats and issues that could be involved here so more information is needed. Usually the /boot partition alone doesn't have much wasted space but 6 meg is not that much to have to find. Might help to have a better idea of what you are trying to do and the underlying local storage you are using. Obviously log files and iso's are culprits in the / partition filling up so check for all of that if /boot isn't on a separate partition.
