vSphere Essentials 5.0 8-way virtual SMP limit

We are currently running vSphere Essentials 5.0 (2000308) in a number of our locations, which has a limit of 8-way virtual SMP for each VM.

Please confirm: With vSphere Essentials 5.5, there is no longer a limit on virtual SMP's & you can run as many virtual cpu/cores as your host has in VM's (as long as your VM OS supports it)? If this is correct, can the 5.5 Essentials license be applied to our 5.0 Essentials license to remove this limit for our 5.0 environment? We have support through 2017, so the license is available to us.

Thank you,

That's correct. This and other limitations have been removed with vSphere 5.5 (except for the free Hypervisor). See VMware KB: Licensing for vSphere 5.5 for details. However, the license key itself remains the same. In order to benefit from the new features you need to upgrade your environment to vSphere 5.5.
