vSphere Client 5.1 & Win2008

i have vSphere Client 5.10 build 786111 installed on a XP notebook and it connects to my ESXi 5.10 host ok

that notebook is really old so i installed vSphere Client 5.10 onto my Win2008 R2 SP1 server. it installed ok, i think. but it won't connect to the host due to returning an error message about connection failure.

i can ssh into the host, i looked at the auth.log and syslog.log but i don't see any connection errors yet.

its been awhile since i set this all up and its run rather well so i can't recall if i configured something on the XP machine or the ESXi host to allow only that XP machine to connect or if the install of vSphere Client 5.10 on the Win2008 messed up or what.

any ideas as to what i can check or missed?

Only in 5.5 vSphere client cannot be installed on Domain Controller. Your installation of vSphere 5.1 got succeeded in 2008 server and you were able to launch the client . probably something is blocking you to access the host

Can you check if the firewall is ON on the windows 2008 machine? maybe the firewall is blocking the connection?

Is there any firewall between your W2K8 system and the ESXi host?

For SSH port 22 is used but to access the ESXi host using vSphere client you would need port 443 and 902 opened. Can you see if the ports are opened

i added rules for the vSphere Client, and that didn't help.

i turned off the firewall (domain, pub & priv), didn't help

i did added rules for those ports, turned the fw on, didn't help, same connection error.

i tried to install vSphere Client 5.5 just to see if it would connect. but it won't install on a domain controller.

Can you check on ESXi firewall if you have enabled access to vSphere client for particular IP/range. If yes then disable it or add the IP of 2008 machine.

i was able to install vSphere Client 5.5 on a win7 notebook. so, that works. vSphere Client 5.1 on XP works.

i don't think the vSphere Client 5.1 completely installed onto my 2008 server because it never connected to the host to download and data during the install.

i'm guessing somewhere on my 2008 DC its blocking comm to the host but i don't see where, yet

Hi,

You cannot install the vSphere Client on a DC, because of the AD roles. So may be its getting installed partially..???

VMware KB: Installing the vSphere Client in a vSphere 5.5 environment fails with the error: vSphere ...

Thanks,
Avinash

@Avinash,  even vSphere Client 5.1?  if this is the issue, then i'll award you the correct answer.

and yes, it is only getting installed partially.

@aravinds3107

that helps me, at least i know 5.1 can install to my 2008 DC.

i think i can take it from here and start "sniffing" about and see what is blocking it. nothing stuck out in the event logs, but that doesn't mean much.

thanks!

update: i am now able to connect with vSphere Client 5.1 to my host. 'netstat' showed vSphere using another nic on win 2008 although that nic was disabled.

i disabled that nic again and started vSphere Client 5.1 and it connected.

working now! thanks all
