vShield Edge

While provisioing a vShield enabled vDC I see that the VM's deployed inside that vApp is getting an IP range of 172.xxx. How these VM's are getting this private range. Is it  assigned from vSM or vShield edge. Can anybody explain me?

Hi,

VShield Manager is the centralized network management component of vShield and is installed from OVA

as a virtual machine by using the vSphere Client.Using VSM you can make use of Vshield Edge,App,Endpoint and Datasecurity.Since you are using Vshield edge it provides services like Firewall,NAT,DHCP,Site-Site VPN,HA etc.
vApp network can either be
  • Directly connected to an Org Network
  • NAT/Routed to an Org Network
  • Completely Isolated

Can you let me know which network you are using ?

Hello,

We are using Direct/Routed. The thing i need to make clear is when VM's are deployed in these networks its assigned with  static IP of range 172.xxx. How this 172.XX is assigned? Is it from vShield DHCP or how? Let me know.

HI,

In vCloud Director there are 3 methods of assigning IP address.

1. Static-Auto - This will assign the IP address automatically using the Guest customization.

2. Static-Manual - You will have to configure the IP address manually inside the Guest OS.

3. DHCP - IP address will be assigned from DHCP (DHCP service from the vShield Edge).

Please let me know if you need further information.

Karthic.

Thanks for the info. I would like to know that how the 172.xx pool is assigned to VM in a routed network. Is it assigned by vSM? How is that process. Can you please clear it for me.
