vMotion between Mixed Host Versions

If I have a ESX 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 and 6.0 servers, all managed by the same SSO/VCs, in what circumstances can I migrate a VM from a 5.x cluster to a 6.x cluster without downtime? Is it ONLY when source and target BOTH have 6.x?

If I'm moving from 5.x to 6.x, do I need to shutdown the guests before moving them?
