Can I connect a vCenter 5.5 instance to an ESXi 5.0 instance and manage it?

vCenter 5.5 and manage earlier hosts but not the other way around.

It's backwards compatible, not forwards compatible. Smiley Happy

Yes. vCenter is backward compatible but not forward. It is applicable only to major release versions.  ie. vCenter 5.1 can not manage ESXi 5.5 but vCenter 5.1 can manage ESXi 5.1U2

You can always refer to below product introp matrix

Refer:http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/sim/interop_matrix.php

In case of ESXi vs vCenter introp, you will need to select "first option" as "Vmware ESX/ESXi" and another option "VMware vCenter Server".

You will get all the data.
