You can verify whether existing vCenter database is compatible with vSphere 5.5 or not using the VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes.
You can verify your Hardware Model is supported to install or upgrade to ESXi version 5.5 using VMware Compatibility Guide
If you are uing VUM let me know , I can provide you the step by step by Guide to perform it
there is no vCenter
Just follow the video from this blog post: Upgrading to VMware ESXi 5.5 using the Interactive Installer | VMware Support Insider - VMware Blogs
And before start the upgrade, remember to check if your hardware is on HCL for ESXi 5.5.
