unsusable performance copying data from other machine to a vm

using ESX 4

I have a virtual machine setup with server 2008R2 installed (vmxnet3 nic, lsi logic parralel scsci, 4GB ram, 2 vcpus). I am having major performance issues... vmware tools are installed. Just trying to copy data from a physical server on the same vlan as this vm is failing...

"An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file.... Error 0x80090006"

I am new to vmware... so it is quite likely I have not set someting up right.... where do I even begin troubleshooting this? I know the physical server I am trying to copy data from is fine, as it is used by other machines with no issues.

nevermind, I found out from the physical switch that it was negotiating to only 100Mbs half duplex... changed nic on ESX host to auto negogiate and that took care of it, negotiating to full 100Mbs full duplex now.
