unable to vmotion or edit settings after VMware Tools 208167 install - RHEL 5.4

After installing VMwareTools-4.0.0-208167.tar.gz, we are unable to vmotion or edit settings of the virtual machine. Attempts to disconnect the CD/DVD drive result in an error "The operation is not allowed in the current state".

The tools install completed without incident, got the "enjoy" message, and did the rmmod, etc. But now several Linux guests are stuck on hosts, and we can not edit settings for them.

These are not test platforms. Rebooting is not a casual undertaking. Is VMware replacing the kernel? Even if it was, why is vMotion now blocked?

You have umounted the CD from within the Redhat VM?

>umount /dev/cdrom

Yes, the cdrom(iso) has been umount immediately following the tar per the directions. The script also indicates it ejected the media in the enjoyable message.

I can vMotion guests with isos backed by local host storage, it does indicate a warning, but it works. This is an error.

I am confused then. Is there a Physical CD mounted?

VMware tools is not a requirement for vMotion so there is some other issue that is preventing it. An incomplete process still running on the host? The CD?

Run through the install / upgrade again.

Have a look through http://kb.vmware.com/kb/

We are confused as well. vcenter reports the tools are ok. attempting to mount /dev/cdrom fails 'no medium found' However vcenter gives that error when we try to disconnect the CD/DVD, and vMotion fails.

Restarted vcenter, the guests can move again. It was only a few linux guests, but they are free again.
