traffic shaping per VM?

Hi,

I was wondering: is there a way with ESXi (or ESX 4.1 enteprise) to do traffic shaping per VM? I know I can do it on the "switch" level, but I didn't find where can I do it per VM (example: one machine will have 10mbit down, 2mbit up, another machine: 20mbit down, 4mb up etc..)

Thanks

You can't, at least not with the base software. You could do that on your physical switch, or with Cisco 1000V

I think a workaround is to create a dedicated VM Network for the VM that you need to limit bandwidth.  You won't need a dedicated NIC since you can create multiple VM Network bound to the same NIC and only enable Traffic Shapping on specific VM Network.

You need third party tool to manage the trafic. You can assign bandwidth according to your IP address. There is some hardware thar can mange the traffice. Like MikroTick. You can shape the traffic with this device.
