throttled transfer from ESX host to a remote site

Hi all,

I need a solution for a throttled file transfer.

Background:

I have one Site in China with a ESXi 5.0 and a Headquater in Germany with a file/FTP/... (what ever is needed)

I'm creating backups with ghettoscript to a local harddisc in China.

Now I want to transfer these backup to Germany.

I need to slow down the transfer, as the Internet line is also used for our Citrix environment.

I thought about an ftp Client on the ESXi and setup my FTP Server to limit the bandwith.

Problem: I didn't find an ftp-Client on the ESXi.

I also thought about scp, but is it possible to slow down the transfer?

Please help me with this isse.

Thank you

Stefan

I've tested the veeam fastscp, but I can not find any throtteling.

Is it possible with this tool?

If you want a GUI file copy you can use WinSCP that will give you a slider bar for throttling.

as the copy job needs to be scripted, I need a command line tool.

Any other solutions?

Maybe you could use the VMware management appliance? this has scp, maybe you could create a cronjob script to connect to a host and copy that way.

I've had a look at the vMA...

looks like an overkill for a single copy job. 😕

I also tested the scp command.

I managed to transfer the file with a throttled speed.

Problem now:

It requests an interactive password.

I googled some and found how to use scp with fingerprints.

But now the ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 1024
is not available on my esx host.

Maybe someone can push me in the right direction?

Thanks

Stefan

I am not sure, but are you able to use qos on your network side?

Maybe you could use that to not overload your network bandwith.
