system-auth, system-auth-local, and system-auth-generic?

What exactly are these files?

On some hosts when I run the "esxcfg-auth -p" command, sometimes "system-auth" and "system-auth-generic" are listed. and on another host only the "system-auth-generic" file is listed.

I alse see where the "system-auth-local" and "system-auth-generic" files are listed in the "login.map" file as such:

vpxuser: system-auth-local

*          : system-auth-generic

On another instance - when I run the "esxcfg-auth -p" command, sometimes "system-auth" and  "system-auth-generic" are listed. However, when i look in the "login.map" it is as such:

vpxuser: system-auth-local

*          : system-auth-generic

Based on this one would assume that by running the "esxcfg-auth --usepamqc=8 8 8 8 8 -1" would make the change to the "system-auth-generic" file since it is listed in the "login.map" file. Instead the PAM changed occurred in the "system-auth" file.
