Good Morning,

I inherited a server with installed esxi 5.0 (Free).

I would like to make it fired with version essential to do it just enter the license through vSphere Client -> configuration -> licensed features- '

You need to reinstall the hypervisor esxi?

Thank You

Buongiorno,

ho ereditato un server con installato esxi 5.0 (free).

Vorrei renderlo licenziato con la versione essential per farlo basta inserire la licenza tramite vSphere Client -> configuration -> licensed features-'

Oppure necessita la reinstallazione dell'hypervisor esxi?

Grazie

Yes, if you will not use vCenter, here is the steps:

Licensing a standalone ESXi host

To license a standalone ESXi 5.x (vSphere Hypervisor):

  1. Log in to the ESXi host using vSphere Client.
  2. Click the Configuration tab.
  3. Click Licensed Features under Software.
  4. Click Edit under Licensed Features.
  5. Select Assign a new license key to this host.
  6. Press Enter and enter the License Key.
  7. Click OK.

If you will deploy vCenter, you can add licenses to vCenter, and once you add the ESXi host to vCenter you will be able to assign the Essentials license to the ESXi host.

Veeam and other VM backup solutions need access to Storage APIs to backup the VMs, Storage API is available with at least Essential (paid) license.
