svmotion vm with rdm

I want to svmotion some vms to different datastores but they have rdms attached. I want to convert the rdm to vmdk. But do I have to shutdown the vm to do this?

It depends... if you have RDM using virtual mode you can Storage vMotion with VMs online, take a look here for more details: VMware KB: Migrating virtual machines with Raw Device Mappings (RDMs)

Take a look on this note from KB article I have posted on previous post:

And another interesting note if your RDM are greater than 2TB:

  • When migrating Physical mode RDM pointer files that are greater than 2TB using Storage vMotion, you must use the vSphere Web Client.

hi what do you think is the best way to migrate MSCS cluster with a quorum RDM? I need to move or create the same RDM on the destination datastore

I guess you'd better svMotion without RDM, then move RDM by means of your Array, then reattach your RDM to VMs.
