I renamed a vm in vcenter, svmotion it to another lun. but the vmdk files are still showing the old name. any ideas?

This is a known bug in vSphere5

With ESXi 4.1 the datastores (source and destination) need to have different block sizes. Unless I'm mistaken the reason for this is the datatmover which is used in this case (see http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/02/18/blocksize-impact/)
