suddenly can't ping ESXI 6 server

I came in and have no communication with my vm's running in esxi. I connected a monitor to the physical server to see if it was online and it was so I tested management network and its not pinging the default gateway. I checked the physical cable unplugged and reconnected tried again and still failed. I restarted the physical server and still no ping?? What do I check for? Has anyone had this issue? I can't communicate with the server so the vm's can't be reached.

I'd connect the management network to a small, known good, test switch, and then connect my laptop to that same small switch.  Using the laptop I'd try to access the host.  This would give guidance as to your next troubleshooting step, either the ethernet adapter(s) or the network.  Might try a different cable while your mucking around.

What version of 6 are you running? If it is 6.0, it sounds like you might be seeing the NetDev Watchdog bug: VMware KB: NETDEV WATCHDOG timeout error and ESXi 6.0 loses network connectivity
