software fcoe and vmkernel

Hello everyone,

Have a question. We were able to configure a vmware esxi host Dell m620 blade. With a Dell mxl going to a nexus 7010 running fcoe. In order to get the top snooping bridge to work I had to setup a vmkernel with an ip address. Keep in mind this is a storage vdc. So this switch goes nowhere but to other storage devices.

Is putting an ip address in the vmkernel not supported? Or is it ok to do this. Assuming the vmkernel doesn't need to talk to Nything else.

Hi Dalberico,

Looks like you are on the right path.  It is best practice to create a vmkernel portgroup to talk to your storage as per: vSphere Documentation Center

It is not supported to enter a 2nd default gateway for your vmkernel, but surely you can have it in the same subnet as the Dell mxl and not require one.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Marcin
