shrink a disc

Hi,

i have a ESX4 with a local disc (600GB) and this is integrated into vCenter 4.

One VM has a c-drive with 50GB and a d-drive with 450GB (200GB are used) - both SCSI thick provisioned. Now i want to shrink the d-drive to a size of 250GB. How can i do this? I don't have any other disc on the ESX available to copy the data.

You can use VMware Converter - there is a "Maintain size" versus "Change size" option in one of the steps.

You can use VMware Converter, as written before, but you will need free space to copy the data.

Or you can convert the disk from thick to thin (you still need free space for this operation) with vmkfstool.

I always use vmware converter to copy /backup a virtual machine to another machine/PC.

So I would convert from your esx to a windows machine, then back while shrinking the disk, and having a backup copy at the same time !
