separate vlan for service console and vkernel

Hi All,

i need to restructure my uat and dev environment, keeping both under same vcenter. I am running machine with 4 nic cards(currently using  2 each for sc+vk & vm port gp with eather channel). Reason behind it is that we are going to have separate storage(will use nfs) in uat and dev segment which are to be used by servers (virtual & physical) in respective segment. I will be having 2 clusters as uat and dev. wanted help regardeing the same

  • wanted to know if i can have my service console and vmkernel running in separage vlans as given below
    • uat cluster
      • sc - 10.10.11.x
      • vk - 10.10.12.x
    • dev cluster
      • sc - 10.10.11.x
      • vk - 10.10.50.x

kindly let me know for more info on above, any other suggestion on above will be helpful

Yes running your SC and VMkernel networks on different VLAN's will work - this is a best practice.

In an ideal world , not only would you use a seperate VLAN but you might want to use a seperate network althogether , this means that vmotion traffic will never impact VM traffic. Its also more secure.

in my current setup i have done just that, there r 2 vswitch one has sc+vk & another has all vmnetwork

  • vswitch0
    • service console
    • vmkernel1 - for storage
    • vmkernel2 - for vmotion
  • vswitch1
    • vmnetwork
