Is it possible to rename a VMDK file?
Ive browsed to the datastore and can see the vmdk file and also the -ctk.vmdk file but when i right click the option to rename is grey.
So how do you rename?
Thanks
Stewart
you can rename the vmdk, and not rename the object itself, but the vmx file must point the the renamed disk file(s). it's in this KB article, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002491, which I pointed out above.
within the .vmx file you'll see something like
scsi0:0.fileName = "OpenSUSE.vmdk"
.
if you don't have vCenter
http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002491
if you do have vCenter
http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1009212
...also, if you have vCenter, you can rename the vCenter object, shutdown the guest and do a cold migration. Finally, you can always use VMware Converter and do a V2V
hmm thanks for the link troy ive had a look but its not quite what i want, as i dont want to rename the VM.
Can i just power the VM off, remove the drive, browse to the data store and rename somehow then re-add into the properties?
You can rename the VM and then do a migration. It shall change the filename automatically.

ahh cool thanks Troy this is what i needed. Its only one of its secondary disks that needs renaming and not the others (due to a name clash which commvault VADP cannot cope with yet).
