relocating virtual machines is slow!

Migrating datastores off the local server disks to the SAN and it is taking forever! Took and hour to move a 112 Gig datastore with the virtual server over to the SAN.

I see that the priority level is set to standard, can that be changed to high, like it can when you Vmotion over a host? Is there anything I can change to speed up the process?

Thanks, Tandrist

What type of connectivity do you have to your SAN? Is it an iSCSI SAN or FC SAN or what? I think we may need a little more information before we can help you determine the resolution, if any.

Are the disks thin provisioned?

The latest patches (Sept. 2010) address an issue with slow migrations for thin provisioned disks.

They are thick provisioned virtuals.

Are you using a hardware or software initiator? Also, are you using

jumbo frames or not? How many VM's do you currently have running on

this host during the operation?

Software initiator, all other virtuals have been moved off this VM. Relocating the last two now and it looks like it's going to take most of the night. So no hosts are running on it at this time. There is quite a bit of data it needs to relocate, but we are at 30% and it started at 9 AM this morning.

I am assuming you can verify connected speeds? Also, the datastore you are migrating to, does it currently have anything running on it while this is going on? I ran into a similar issue on an AX150 that did this. It had a bunch of VMs running on the datastore that was being migrated to.
