not using vCenter in this case, just raw ESX with the vSphere client.
in the Datastore Browser, we can upload files, download files, move files, and delete files.
is there not some way to copy files from one datastore to another in the vSphere client?
For a faster copy I recommend you download Veeam FastSCP client. Its free to use.
Once you download, install and add both hosts to it. When thats done you can see all the data stores from both hosts and you can either drag and drop or rightclick copy paste.
The benefit is that it copies data twice as fast than tradition vmware data copy.
Download it here.

The problem just surfaced a few days ago. Any fix needs to be tested before it is applied so it could take several days. It will probably be a part of other updates and fixes so ??????
In use files on most operating systems have the same results. If you are trying to copy a vmdk you can take a snapshot and then copy the base disk. When done use snapshot manager to delete the snapshot. The earlier reference to Veeam fastscp is a good one. A nice tool to have.
Shutting down the VM should always work.
