hi! I've recently upgraded my flash storage in my ibm blade svr to vsphere 4i. My question is that is there a way that i can save my settings (eg. IP, network config, vm connection) in the hypervisor be in esx3.5 or 4? I tried once to reinstall version 4, but it seems that all the settings are gone. I've to reconfigure the esx svr and manually add in all the vm to that host. Is there any way that can save me from all these issues after reinstalling the hypervisor after eg. corruption to the hypervisor or hardware issue?
I also notice that whenever i recreate the vm and pointing back the vm to the old file there will be another folder created for the "new vm" which has nothing in there except the .vmx file. What's the best way to tidy up all these folders?
What would be the advise on this? Thanks.
You can use the vicfg-cfgbackup command from the vCLI to backup and restore the system config of an ESXi host.

If you create a new VM ESXi will check to see if a folder with the VM name you specify already exists. If so it will add to the folder name. If you want a single folder, you would have to rename the folder that holds the vmdk before you create the new VM and then move the vmdk to the new VM folder.

Do you have a system or PCI card working with VMDirectPath? Submit your specs to the Unofficial VMDirectPath HCL - http://www.vm-help.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=21.
If you don't have a complicated setup it is quite easy to browse the datastore and open the existing folders for the virtual machines and right click on the vmx file and import the virtual machine.
