open RDM device with vix DISKLIB fails

i am trying to open a RDM device with VIX DISKLIB and get an error for both virtual RDM and physical RDM.

did anybody encountered this error before?

the error is:

VixDiskLibGenericWarn: VmfsExtentOpen: Vmfs not supported on this product.

Not sure which version of ESXi you're using, but I'm going to move this question to the ESXi 5 forum area.

It seems like the virtual machine is unable to open a referenced virtual machine disk file.
