not able to power vm's on esx3.5 in vcenter4

Hi all,

Let me explain you my test enviournment. I have three esx servers running 4.1 in virtual center 4. All licensed and things are working fine. Now I have added a single esx 3.5 host in virtual center. I am able to create a VM but when I try to power it on it gives me an error “”you may not be able to power on the machine”. I guess this is happening as there is no license for this esx3.5 host. Is this right ???

Also in VMware esx 3.5 update 5 was the license changed to 25 character key set or this happened from esx4.0. Please confirm.

Thank you all a ton in advance

You will need to have a look at VMware Knowledge Base article 1010704 (http://kb.vmware.com/kb1010704).

ESX 3 hosts require a license server to dispatch the required license to the server as vCenter Server 4 are unable to do this task due to the changes in the licensing system.

The article should provide you with everything that you need to know.

Hope that helps!

Hello.

Correct, you will need a separate license and a standalone license server for the ESX 3.5 host.

Also in VMware esx 3.5 update 5 was the license changed to 25 character key set or this happened from esx4.0. Please confirm.

The 25 character license codes were introduced with vSphere 4.

Good Luck!
