naming convention

Hello all,

Other than uniformity, does it matter whether our ESX or/and VM's are upper case or lower case.

I can remember back when we first started using VM (ver 1.1), a VM rep told us to name everything in lower case.

I didn't know if that has changed over the years

thanks in advance for your responses

I've seen both, even mixed without particular problems.

I usually used lower cases for esx and Upper cases for VMs labels.

b/c VM hosts' name is in /etc/hosts file, so lowercase.

here is one of the solution to explain why

No, hostnames and VMs doi not need to be case sensitive, but your port groups and datastores should be mapped this way.

Because of this, it is good to standardise what you do (e.g. first letter capital , or all lowercase or whatever)

If you try configure HAetc and your PortGroups are named

port1 and PORT1, ESX sees them as different port groups!

One day I will virtualise myself . . .
