moving existing VM to another datastore

Hello,

we are running 2 vSphere 5.5 hosts (VMware vSphere 5 Essentials Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU).

One of our datastores has insufficient free disk space.

I would be happy if somebody could give me a piece of advice what is the best way to move or copy a VM to another datastore.

I already have read following KB, but did not understand it completely.

Hi,

It's easy, just use SVMOTION (Storage vMotion) for migrate your virtual machine from one datastore to another.

What the part this link you don't understand?

The vmotion can doing this. Move the vm between datastore, Or you can doing with client vmconverter.

Another method is you can to doing download the vm, and after doing the upload in another datastore.

I'm not sure your vSphere Essentials license includes Storage vMotion.  If it does, then it's your best bet.  If not, check out these other ways.

Hi,

I did not understand the part of the snapshots. How do I know if I am using snapshots or not.

As far as I understood backup software like veeam uses snapeshots.

Not sure what you problem is exactly.

Can you power down the machine while moving?

Then you don't need Storage VMotion at all.

SiImply select the host vom VClient choose "Migrate" from menu

and select the desired host and datastore and you are done.

we have the VMware Essentials license, as far as I know vMotion is includes only in the Essential Plus license.

I will have a look at veeam fastscp.

Then you can simply do what you want with a few mouse clicks

even with the Essentials license (see my above post).

Hi,

my problem is that one of our datastore has insufficiente free disk space.

Backup task of veeam fails because there is no enough free space for the snapshot on the VM itself.

Sure out of the main office time I can shut down the vm I would like to move to another datastore.

yes, we do have vCenter installed

Your screenshot shows you are on the right track.

As soon as you have powered down the VM the

greyed out options get enabled even on Essentials.
