I have need to present a modem to a windows vm. Is there a way I can do this in vsphere 4.0 update 2 ?
the only requirement is that it is hayes 56k compatible.
It should be possible to use an EXTERNAL serial modem in ESX.
Do you have any idea how to set it up?
this will give you a kind of how to
http://www.vladan.fr/serial-port-handling-in-esxi-4-1/
..as stated though it breaks vMotion for the guest in question
Could also be done with a modem server (to keep vMotion)

unfortunately, this does not apply to 4.0 up 2
I could do this, just don't really like this approach. If I have only one vm that needs it, I might as well just build the physical system.
BUt if i need multiple vm's to do this, it would be a better approach. Thanks for the input.
modems are not supported in vmware according to support.
Have you tried USB-over-IP to connect to a remote USB port via Ethernet? This approach can survive vMotion events...
Not an endorsement, but here's an example:

This is more streamlined than OSagentnetwork (i.e. software solutions.) Read the compatibility caveats:
http://www.digi.com/support/kbase/kbaseresultdetl.jsp?id=3039
which suggests that you get a SERIAL modem and hang a USB-to-SERIAL converter from the hub (increase complexity, I know...)

...or if a serial modem is an absolute must have for your VI, upgrade to 4.1
he person requesting it found a simpler method so did not have to pursue this any more
