The current version is vSphere 5.1 but version 5.5 has been announced and will be available in the near future.

As of now latest Vmware stable version in 5.1.. Also they have  announced Vmware 5.5  ..you can user 5.1 and later can upgrade with new one..simple

You should check not only version-number, but build-number too. You can find it i.e. in VMware patch download portal:

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/patch

So right now, the latest (non-beta) version is ESXi 5.1.0, build number 1157734
