jumbo frame support

So Duncan over at yellowbricks posted a note about Jumbo frames not being supported in vmkernel ports with ESXi. He references a SINGLE sentence in the vSphere Admin guide. I find this little nugget very distirubing for numerous reasons. First we keep being told and sold how EQUAL esxi is to esx, same hypervisor, just no service console. Second, we are told how vSphere now supports Jumbo frames, but apparently it doesn't, only ESX does. Third, the only reference to ESXi not supporting jumbo frames is this one sentence. So, is VMware just saying the FREE version of ESXi doesn't support Jumbo Frames for vmkernel ports or even licensed versions don't (kind of the way they did with the read only feature of the vMA)? I know for a fact that it works just fine, I have done numerous installs using Jumbo Frames for my vmkernel ports. So what about it is unsupported? Anybody have experience with ESXi and jumbo frames? What are your thoughts about this little gotcha?

The functional differences between ESX and ESXi are slight. Some features are NOT available in the free version of ESXi but do exist with any licensed version. If you have a licensed version you will not have any trouble with equivalent features.

I am running jumbo frames on my vmk ports for iscsi. No issues. I am running licensed standard edition, never tried it on free but I don't see why you can't use jumbo on free...I would be surprised...i will have to try this out in my lab.

According to this KB article ESXi Free wont allow Jumbo frames. I tried to find a list of all the "licensed" restriction for ESXi a while back, but couldn't find a list.

This is what I'm thinking the config guide is referring to. The Free version doesn't support it, but a licensed version does. Another funny thing, if you look at the Multivendor iSCSI guide that was put out to the community a while back, their example and screenshots are using ESXi as well.

Any help VMware???
